Eraser and magic eraser

There are actually two different eraser. The Eraser and the Magic Eraser. The "normal" eraser enables you to "paint with transparency" mostly like you do when using one of the drawing tools. Meanwhile the Magic Eraser works like the paint can but selecting areas of contiguous and similarly colored pixels and removing them. Thus creating transparent zones.
